Qigong and Tai Chi for Health and Wellness

Qigong is a traditional Chinese practice that combines physical postures, movement, breathing techniques, and focused intention to cultivate and balance the body's vital energy, known as "qi" or "chi." It is often described as a form of moving meditation, promoting physical health, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. The practice features various forms and styles. Some focus on health benefits, while others, such as Tai Chi, emphasize martial art applications. Regular practice enhances flexibility, strength, and stress management.

Tammy Kearce has practiced Qigong and Tai Chi for more than a decade and became certified to teach in 2025. She currently teaches at The Yoga Garden Collective in Freeport, Florida, and Time to Be Present Wellness in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.

Benefits of practicing Qigong:

  1. Physical Fitness: Qigong involves gentle movements that enhance flexibility, balance, and overall physical health without the risk of injury associated with more intense physical activities
  2. Stress Relief: Qigong promotes relaxation and helps manage stress through slow, mindful movements and focused breathing.
  3. Improved Focus and Concentration: The meditative aspects of Qigong can enhance mental clarity and focus, which can be helpful for studying and other academic activities.
  4. Emotional Balance: Regular practice can help teens develop emotional awareness and resilience, aiding in managing mood swings and anxiety.
  5. Mind-Body Connection: Qigong encourages awareness of the body and breath, fostering a strong mind-body connection that can contribute to better self-esteem and body image.
  6. Social Interaction: Practicing Qigong in groups or classes can provide social support and a sense of community, which is valuable during the teenage years.
  7. Holistic Health: Qigong promotes not just physical health but also mental and emotional well-being, supporting a holistic approach to health that can benefit teens as they develop.

Encouraging youth to practice Qigong can provide them with valuable tools for managing the challenges of adolescence while promoting a healthier lifestyle.
